TweetDeck, renamed X Pro, now requires a subscription
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( Ashley Capoot | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
On Wednesday morning, many marketers, journalists and news junkies were met with a paywall they have been dreading: X, formerly known as Twitter, started charging users to access TweetDeck. TweetDeck, now called X Pro, allows users to view and customize multiple feeds that update in real time. The service has historically been free to use, but X announced in a post in July that it would become a subscriber-only feature. Starting Wednesday, users who want access to X Pro will have to pay for X Premium, the service introduced by the site's owner, Elon Musk, as a way to generate additional revenue for the company. Twitter Blue relaunched again in December, though impersonation problems persisted.

Pettiness is the order of the day for prominent tech bros.Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and others are behaving similarly amid their rivalries with each other. It comes at an awkward moment: petty season has come straight after layoff season. Whatever the case, it's got tech bros stooping to new depths of pettiness. Musk's response, in peak petty fashion, was to suggest that he'd rock up at Zuck's home in Palo Alto and fight him there. Tens of thousands of tech workers have been laid off in recent months amid claims that they need to get serious.

It's Elon Musk's latest change to Twitter's famous lexicon as part of the platform's rebrand to X. Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, seems to be in the process of renaming its TweetDeck feature "XPro." It's the latest change in Musk's ongoing transition of Twitter to X that has upended the social media platform's hallmarks, such as its lexicon and logo. TweetDeck is still undergoing changes, but its new name, XPro, is starting to appear on the webpage. "If successful, X will enter the vernacular in ways that we don't yet know," Musk wrote on X Wednesday regarding the rebrand.

New York CNN —Elon Musk disclosed on Twitter Saturday that, due to a 50% drop in advertising revenue and a “heavy debt load,” the platform still has a negative cash flow. Ad revenue has been a contentious issue and an uphill battle for the site, after hordes of advertisers fled after Musk took over. The New York Times reported that Twitter’s US advertising revenue from the five weeks from April 1 to the first week of May was down 59% year-over-year, citing an internal presentation. “It’s definitely been extremely difficult,” Musk said in Twitter Spaces livestream event Musk hosted with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr last month. On Thursday, Twitter announced content creators would be able to get a slice of the site’s ad revenue, seemingly to encourage more creators to join the site.

Twitter is experiencing a wave of outages just as Meta's brand new rival Threads service is racking up tens of millions of signups. Many Twitter users have reported outages over the past 24 hours, with problems seemingly skyrocketing around 9:30 a.m. About 70% of the Twitter outages appear related to its desktop service, Downdetector noted. Meanwhile, the Threads app has recorded 70 million signups just a day after its official release as of Friday morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Threads post.

Mark Zuckerberg bills Threads as a space for kindness — but he's not above using it to ding Elon Musk. Threads arrives as Twitter has another disastrous week. As the Meta chief put it on the new Threads app, the vision is "to create an open and friendly public space for conversation" for 1 billion-plus people. It's a highly calculated move to release a Twitter clone in a week of Twitter chaos. Threads can only be so friendly then if its growth, for now, comes from the conflagration at Twitter.

With Twitter in chaos, Mark Zuckerberg looks to pounce

Washington CNN —Mark Zuckerberg has tried for years to take on Twitter. Now he may finally have his best chance to deliver a knockout blow to the social network at a turbulent moment. On Friday, Twitter made tweets inaccessible to anyone who wasn’t logged in, reducing the reach of the platform’s content. For years, Twitter has been the go-to social platform for real-time news and commentary. The more Twitter users head for the exits, the more its alternatives benefit from network effects.

It's a problem that might go away if Twitter verified all of its users. Remember when Elon Musk handed out free blue checks to some Twitter users after taking them away? "To ensure the authenticity of our user base we must take extreme measures to remove spam and bots from our platform," Twitter said in a blogpost. Bloomberg reported in April that around 4% of people who went to the Twitter Blue sales site ended up subscribing to the service. When announcing that ambition to Twitter employees last month, Yaccarino said "that's not an empty promise."

Meta's new Threads app Courtesy Meta“The vision for Threads is to create an option and friendly public space for conversation,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Threads post following the launch. After downloading the app, users are asked to link up their Instagram page, customize their profile and follow the same accounts they already follow on Instagram. Verified Instagram accounts are also automatically verified on Threads. In this photo illustration, the app Threads from Meta seen displayed on a mobile phone. July 3 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms (META.O) plans to launch a microblogging app, Threads, days after Twitter executive chair Elon Musk announced a temporary cap on how many posts users can read on the social media site. Threads, Instagram's text-based conversation app, is expected to be released on Thursday and will allow users to follow the accounts they follow on the photo-sharing platform and keep the same username, a listing on Apple's (AAPL.O) App Store showed. The launch comes after Twitter announced a slate of restrictions on the app, including the need to be verified in order to use TweetDeck. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on a similar launch on the Google Play Store. Soon, only verified users will be able to access TweetDeck, the dashboard that allows users to organize and easily monitor the accounts they follow, the platform tweeted Monday. The news of the TweetDeck paywall came days after Musk announced temporary reading limits on Twitter, restricting verified users to reading 10,000 tweets a day, along with 1,000 tweets for unverified accounts and 500 for new unverified accounts. “In 30 days, users must be Verified to access TweetDeck,” the tweet said. Users had complained about the old version of TweetDeck being down after Musk implemented the reading limits. And just before that, Twitter appeared to be restricting access to its platform for anyone not logged into an account.

Threads: Meta takes aim at Twitter with new app
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( Hanna Ziady | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Zuckerberg’s Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has teased a new app that is set to take on Twitter by offering a rival space for real-time conversations online. The app is called Threads and it is expected to go live Thursday, according to a listing in the App Store. The app appears to have many similarities to Twitter — the App Store description emphasizes conversations, as well as the potential to build a following and connect with like-minded people. Since taking Twitter private in October, Musk has turned the social media platform on its head, alienating advertisers and some of its highest-profile users. Twitter announced Monday that users would soon need to pay for TweetDeck, a tool that allows people to organize and easily monitor the accounts they follow.

Twitter says users must be verified to access TweetDeck

July 3 (Reuters) - Twitter users will soon need to be verified in order to use TweetDeck, the social media company said in a tweet on Monday. Twitter made the announcement in a tweet detailing an improved version of TweetDeck with new features. It was unclear if Twitter will charge users for both the new and old version of TweetDeck. loadingHis announcement sparked a fierce backlash from users on Twitter, and ad experts said it would undermine new CEO Linda Yaccarino, who started in the role last month. Individuals must pay $8 per month to verify their account, while organizations pay $1,000 per month.
